The School of Engineering promotes innovation to improve the efficiency of port logistics
August 24 , 2018

Experts in the field participated in the III Latin American and Caribbean Meeting of Logistic Port Communities and the II Scientific Research Colloquium on Port Logistics Chains and shared best practices for the segment.

Lima, August 15. Within the framework of the SELA-CAF Programme for the Creation of Digital and Collaborative Ports, international SAP experts participated in the III Latin American and Caribbean Meeting of Logistic Port Communities and the II Scientific Research Colloquium on Port Logistics Chains with the purpose of sharing best practices and the strategic vision of the company related to innovation in logistics and port areas.

Port services face enormous challenges that demand new business and operating models: high dependence on global markets, fluctuating energy costs, capital investment needs, overcapacity, new customs regulations and increasingly demanding customers who expect total transparency of their business operations. SAP promotes innovation and best practices in the industry as a way for organizations in the sector to adapt and compete in this new reality.

Adam Mardini, Vice President of Development Architecture at SAP

"The digital transformation of ports and the creation of a collaborative network are key strategies on which we can share our global experiences with organizations in the region," said Adam Mardini, Vice President of Development Architecture at SAP, Customer Innovation and Enterprise Platform. "Innovation substantially improves efficiency in port operations such as asset management, the logistics of port movement, permanent and real-time measurement of traffic, among others, without neglecting financial, commercial and human resources management", he added.

SAP has successfully implemented advanced solutions for efficient management in more than 50 of the world's largest ports, such as Hamburg, where innovation technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT) are used to optimize the use of the limited space and assets available.

Mario Chong, Associate Dean of the Business Engineering Program

For his part, Mario Chong, Associate Dean of the Business Engineering Program at Universidad del Pacifico, academic host of the event, said that a key aspect of the program is to achieve greater integration in the region through an international network of logistic port communities that serve to exchange experiences, studies and benchmarks and to encourage collaboration between industry, government and academia.

"For Universidad del Pacífico, being a member of this network and collaborating with the Digital Ports program activities is very important. It is our commitment to train and educate our students in the competencies, skills and new technologies that private and public companies require, particularly as regards port digitalization, a sector with high complexity and where a large number of actors are involved", Chong added.

María José Compte, Director of SAP University Alliances Southern Region, stressed that the participation of SAP along with Universidad del Pacífico, is a clear example of collaboration within the framework of the SAP Next Gen program of which the university is part and whose goal is driving innovation to support SAP's commitment to the United Nations' 17 sustainable development goals. SAP Next Gen allows academic institutions to incorporate SAP solutions for teaching and research purposes in order to foster technological innovation in next-generation professionals, creating leaders for the smart company.

"The projects, events and activities developed under this program allow SAP customers and partners to connect with academic leaders and researchers, students, startups, community technology partners and SAP experts to reimagine the future of industries through new technologies", said Compte. Through a network of more than 3,300 educational institutions in 111 countries, SAP University Alliances aims to develop critical skills for the digital future among academics, university students and young thinkers.
