Five UP articles published by Harvard Business Publishing
October 10 , 2016

Five case studies conducted by UP specialists are part of the Cladea-Balas Case Consortium collection (CBCC), published by Harvard Business Publishing.

These publications have been prepared following the Harvard Business School methodology and have gone through a thorough peer review process.

We congratulate the authors: Elsa Del Castillo, President of the University; Michelle Rodriguez, Dean of the School of Engineering; Giuliana Leguía, Director of Master's Programs at the Graduate School; Matthew Bird, professor at the Graduate School; Arlette Beltrán, professor at the School of Economics and Finance; Alonso Villarán, professor at the Academic Department of Humanities; Hanny Cueva and Betty Alvarado, researchers.

Here are the cases:

1.  Banco de Crédito del Perú: Agente BCP - ¿Estrategia de canalización o segmentación de canales? (Banco de Crédito del Perú: BCP Agent - Channeling strategy or channel segmentation?) by Giuliana Leguia, Michelle Rodriguez Serra and Elsa Del Castillo.

This study describes how a 120-year-old domestic bank in Peru, focused on socio-economic segments A, B and C, on corporate banking, and owner of the largest network of customer service channels in the country, found a business opportunity in a segment that moves away from its core business: the low-income sector (D).

2. Crédito para mujeres microempresarias: Evaluación de un proyecto social (Credit to women microentrepreneurs: Evaluation of a social project), Arlette Beltrán, Betty Alvarado and Hanny Cueva.

Evaluation of the second phase of a project on microcredits to women entrepreneurs. The social and economic effects of the first phase of the project were measured using a non-experimental method and without a control group since the evaluators did not have control over the information collected initially. The evaluation was based on two surveys conducted on a group of organizations of selected women that had been granted microcredits.

3. Alimento para el pensamiento: La ley de la "comida chatarra" en el Perú (Food for thought: The "junk food" law in Peru), by Alonso Villarán and Matthew Bird.

Commonly known as the "The junk food law", the proposal stirred so many passions as the country's cuisine, which had in turn acquired global importance together with the steady economic growth of Peru. The enactment of the law would force thousands of kiosks and school canteens to change their offers due to the elimination of processed foods, while advertising of these products to children would require revision.

4. La institucionalización del MALI: Dad y se os dará (The institutionalization of MALI: Give and you shall receive), by Matthew Bird.

This case analyzes the main periods in the institutional development of the Art Museum of Lima, analyzing the dilemma of how to further develop an institution in a society that lacks or has very weak institutions. Will the MALI be an institution able to withstand the strain?

5. El precio de la dignidad - Derechos laborales en Perú (The price of dignity - Labor rights in Peru), by Alonso Villarán and Matthew Bird.

In February 2012, the National Council of Labor and Employment Promotion presented a technical report on how to consolidate the country's labor regulations in a single law, as has been done in other Latin American countries. The aim of the report was to involve business associations, trade unions, non-profit organizations focused on labor issues, and government stakeholders in order to revive an initiative that had begun a decade earlier, but had lost momentum. However, instead of bringing all parties together, the drafting of the new law increased the differences between them. How should that consensus be built?
