UP Law student got internship at the World Bank ICSID
September 10 , 2021
Paula Isabel Silva Longobardi, a twelfth semester law student, participated in the global call for applications and got an internship at the World Bank's International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) from September to December of this year.
Investment arbitration is an uncommon and extremely important specialty, especially when we talk about millionaire or multimillionaire investments, such as public works executed by governments.

In order to train future professionals, the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) offers medium-and short-term internships through global calls, so that students can better understand the work of the entity and improve their academic and professional performance to contribute to the ICSID mission from their countries.

On this occasion and after a thorough evaluation, Paula Isabel Silva Longobardi, a twelfth semester law student, was chosen as one of the six interns for the American fall term. The internship consists of attending a week of training and then being assigned to a case management team. In addition, under the supervision of an experienced Legal Counsel, they will provide assistance in the management of institutional cases and projects. Case management tasks include drafting working papers, researching issues that arise in the course of the case, making logistical arrangements or, occasionally, attending hearings with the permission of the parties and the Tribunal, as part of the educational program.

"UP Law School, through its arbitration classes with Professor Cantuarias and the inclusion of an Investment Arbitration course in its electives, has created a great environment that allows for many of its students to become interested in arbitration. I had the opportunity to do my pre-professional internship at a law firm that developed my interest in investment arbitration. During my last semester, I applied to this program convinced that it would be a great opportunity to continue my training in arbitration before graduating from law school. In my opinion, investment arbitration, specifically, is an essential branch of law for the creation of public policies aimed at development and, as ICSID is the world's leading institution dedicated to the administration of foreign investment disputes, the Center presents an extraordinary learning opportunity," she said.

She also emphasized that it has been very rewarding for her to have the opportunity to be one of the six interns of this season and recommended that students in the last semesters look beyond what they initially proposed for their careers.

"Many times as students about to finish our program we feel frustrated because of the opportunities we don't get or the mistakes we make during this time, but I believe that broadening our horizons to other types of opportunities can surprise us. I feel very grateful and eager to get started, " she concluded.
