Emprende UP will initiate expansion of the innovative ecosystem to promote the development of social enterprises
November 13 , 2017

In the framework of the Entrepreneurship Week organized by the UP Center for Entrepreneurship, it was announced that in 2018 efforts will be increased to promote social enterprises led by women and fintech.

In order to promote equal opportunities, Javier Salinas, Director of Emprende UP, announced that among the main objectives for next year is the promotion of social enterprises led by women and Fintech.

"Today, the goal of all ventures must necessarily be to generate a positive impact. We must give social companies the tools to be sustainable", he told Ganamás magazine. In this sense, Salinas said that Universidad del Pacífico, through its Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation - Emprende UP, has signed an agreement with Asociación de Mujeres del Pacífico (Women's Association of the Pacific) to develop training activities for women entrepreneurs throughout Peru.

On the other hand, Martha Zúñiga, Project Manager of Emprende UP, explained that Peruvian women work 9 hours and 15 minutes more than men with respect to paid work and unpaid domestic work. Of the total load in the week, women devote 52% to unpaid domestic activities such as caring for others, maintaining the house and daily family activities, while men only spend 24% of their time.

Also, women receive 30% less wage income than men. This inequality is also perceived among women entrepreneurs. Zúñiga reported that 35% of women undertake ventures and also receive less income than their peers. In this regard, she assured that two out of ten enterprises benefited by the StartUp Peru contest of the Ministry of Production are led by women.

In another moment, Zúñiga revealed that Emprende UP will carry out a women's entrepreneurship tour in Lima and Arequipa in 2018, among many other activities related to this topic. The commitment to social ventures will also have an impact in the provinces.

Salinas announced that next year they will provide tools to the investors and entrepreneurs that make up the innovative ecosystem of the country's regions. This decision was the result of a pilot work "We have seen that there are good business ideas, investors and corporates that need the support of universities," he highlighted in the framework of the International Entrepreneurship Week organized by the UP Center for Entrepreneurship and incubation. He also commented that Emprende UP closed its tenth transaction through the network of angel investors.
