Paul Gertler
Paul Gertler
is the Li Ka Shing Professor of Economics at the University of California Berkeley where he holds appointments in the Haas School of Business and the School of Public Health. He is also the Director of UC Berkeley’s Graduate Program in Health Management and Scientific Director of the UC Center for Effective Global Action. He is an expert on impact evaluation and development economics.
Pedro Pita Barros
Pedro Pita Barros
is Professor of Economics at Universidade Nova de Lisboa. He is also a research fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research at London. His research focuses on issues on health economics and on regulation and competition policy.

MEETING INFORMATION

LACEA’s health economics network will hold its second annual workshop in Lima (Peru) on the premises of the Faculty of Economics and Finance, Universidad del Pacífico, on the 3rd and 4th of October 2019. We will have around 14 presentations and discussions of high quality papers in health economics, selected by a scientific committee, and two keynote talks: Paul Gertler (UC, Berkeley) and Pedro Pita Barros (Nova School of Business and Economic).

Submissions

Both empirical and theoretical contributions are welcome. Submissions will be judged on their academic merit, where a clear identification strategy will be favoured. Those papers which work on topics relevant for the Latin American context are highly encouraged. A non-comprehensive list of proposed topics is:

  • health prevention and health related behaviours
  • objective and subjective health outcomes
  • public health, mixed private-public health care systems
  • health expenditures
  • market regulation and incentives
  • insurers'/providers' competition and choice
  • national, social and private insurance
  • risk adjustment
  • high cost drugs and long term care
  • policy evaluation and assessment

POPULATION
Peru has a population of over 30 million, of whom almost 9 million live in the capital Lima.
LANGUAGES
The official language is Spanish. In the Andean and Amazonian areas other native languages are also spoken.
CURRENCY
The currency in Peru is the Peruvian Sol (PEN); 1 USD = 3.38 PEN (October , 2019). We suggest that you only change money at the airport, hotels, banks and exchange agencies.
CREDIT CARDS
All credit cards are used and accepted for withdrawing money and commercial transactions. Check with your bank if charges and commissions fees may apply.

ATM tellers are available 24/7 at several locations in Lima.

In october, the temperature in Lima ranges from 15°C to 20°C (59°F to 68°F)
ELECTRICITY
The electricity supply in Peru is 220 Volts AC, 60 Hz. Most outlets are two-pin (European standard) but also accept the US type (with two flat parallel blades). Major hotels have 110 volt outlets for electric razors.
CABS SERVICES
Always take the taxis from the hotels. Taxis do not have a meter. You must ask for the price of the ride before boarding the vehicle.
Mobile apps such as Uber and Cabify operate in the city.
